Keeping track of data is very important for various operations. It helps protect the safety of workers by making sure that the work place conditions such as temperature and humidity are within ideal levels. It is important for ensuring productivity by allowing operations manager to detect deviation on production output or machine performance.

There are two main types of data loggers. Some data loggers are nothing more than a personal computer with a software that allows it to control multiple data acquisition devices and to receive and process data. These types of data loggers are usually used in large-scale operations and greatly helps with minimizing the manpower required for monitoring. The stand-alone data logger is favored for its portability and ease of use. These devices are small, powered by a small battery, light, easy to carry, and equipped with a microprocessor, internal memory for data storage and sensors. A key benefit of using data loggers is that enables collection of data for long periods of time. After activation, data loggers are usually deployed and left alone to remotely measure and record information for the duration of the monitoring timeframe. This makes it possible to create a comprehensive, accurate picture of the data that is being monitored. An example is with weather conditions wherein temperature, wind speed, humidity or rainfall in an area are being tracked. In the past, a data logger usually came fixed to a single type of sensor. A data logger for temperature can only be used for collecting temperature data. Today, data loggers are more versatile due to changeable sensors. A data logger can track and record all kinds of data just by simply changing the type of sensor attached to it.
