Equipment failure can result to stoppage of operation and repairs, both of which causes a company to lose money. There is no way to completely prevent equipment failure from happening. However, the chances of it happening can be minimized by having a proper maintenance program.

Excessive heat generation is one of the leading causes of equipment failure. The extreme heat generated by friction between moving components can cause parts to warp or form cracks due to thermal stress. That is why an integral part of a maintenance program is keeping track of equipment temperature. An infrared camera and wireless thermometer are two very important instruments for protecting equipment and ensuring smooth operations.

An infrared camera is very valuable for performing equipment inspection. In performing an inspection, the equipment usually has to be turned off and not running for safety reasons. An inspection that is performed this way is kind of pointless when dealing with temperature problems. Problems involving heat usually only manifest when the machines are running.

An infrared camera makes it possible to perform an inspection while the machine is running. The inspector or maintenance personnel can gather temperature data from a safe distance while the equipment is operating. The temperature data is much more valuable since it gives a better picture of the operating conditions. A wireless thermometer is used to track and collect temperature data of the work environment. Hot air inside the workshop can cause equipments to run hotter. Some might misconstrued this situation as the equipment having problems when the real issue is that the workshop needs better ventilation or air conditioning.
